Olympic Track Holds “Dress Rehearsal” Practice

With only 82 days left until the first gate drops at the 2012 London Olympics, preparations, and refinements are in the “dress rehearsal” stage, before the world touches down at Heathrow.

Until the Olympians turn up, the star of the show is the London 2012 track, itself. And like most stars today, ours underwent a bit of a facelift (or, as we say in the biz, “had some ‘work’ done”) before the big show.

Sneak Peak at the New Hyper BMX Frame

For those that attended the CJBMX Ironman race in Howell, New Jersey, USA, they got a chance to see the new design for the 2012 Hyper BMX racing frames. Jud Ciancio from Hyper was on hand with his prototype frames to give them a run on the track.

Jud says that the frames are almost ready for production with a few more adjustments and to expect to see them out for the spring of 2012. I was able to take some pics of the cruiser to show the new look.

Fellow racer and web blogger, “Crazy” Al Cayne, sat down with Jud for an interview about the new 20″ frame and what to expect about it. Here is the link to the video at cac-tv.com:

Sanctioning of BMX Racing is unified in the United States

From its humble beginnings in the 1970’s to its inclusion in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, BMX racing has seen many changes through the years.  Many sanctioning bodies have come and gone during the 40 year history of the sport, but two have remained.  The American Bicycle Association (ABA) and the National Bicycle League (NBL) have both been in operation since the 1970’s and now, like so many sports leagues, the two have joined forces and will operate as USA BMX.

Wood Jumps, Flat Turns? BMX is Hot Indoors!

For BMXers from East of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon line, it used to be a December 1 tradition to strip off the knobbies of outdoor season in favor of “stadium tires.” This was because, in all but one or two places in the country, indoor BMX in the 70s and 80s was exclusively run on concrete floors, with wooden jumps and flat turns. In fact, the first World Championship of BMX was decided on such an unorthodox course (Jag World Championships, Indianapolis 1978).

But, evolution and innovation marched forward, and the concrete indoor tracks were replaced by permanent indoor-on-dirt facilities, in Wisconsin (Walworth BMX in Elkhorn, which was started as wood jumps on Dirt), Northern Indiana (Steel Wheels in Hobart) and, yes, in Indianapolis.

Some races those of us of that era remember fondly are the aforementioned Jag Worlds in Indy (1978-1981), and the “Rondo Classic” in Minneapolis (which was not officially a national, but had every pro and factory amateur of the time in attendance). There were also various homespun regional and local races like a few at the old International Amphitheater in Chicago; later at the Odeum in suburban Villa Park, and a series at the Rock Island Armory in the Quad Cities, on the Mississippi River.

Elite Pros Discuss the Upcoming Season

With the ABA’s first race of the season going down this weekend in Reno, Nevada, I thought it would be a good time to check in with some of the top Elites and a couple of riders who are making their Elite Debut for 2011. The question I threw out to them was “What do you plan to do differently for the 2011 season and what are you goals this season?” Here is what they had to say.

Donny Robinson
“My goal is to beat Kyle and Connor and Josh and Cristian and Gavin and Joey and Barry and Sifiso and Hoffman and Denzel. But seriously, I’d like to have as much fun as possible and to do well at as many races as I can.”

UCI extends partnership with VSI Products

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has announced the extension of its partnership with VSI Products.

VSI remains the official supplier of THE handlebar numbers for the 2010/2011/2012 UCI BMX World Championships, 2010/2011/2012 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup and the London 2012 Olympic Games. The three-year sponsorship deal continues the excellent collaboration between the UCI and VSI Products that started in 2007. The UCI signed a sponsorship contract with the Californian company the year before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and as a consequence all the riders at the Games used THE handlebar numbers. Since that time, THE has become the official supplier of handlebar numbers for all races at the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup and UCI BMX World Championships: VSI Products supply over 4,000 customised handlebar numbers every year.

News from the UCI

Press release – UCI BMX Supercross World Cup to be managed by Global SX Events Inc.

The International Cycling Union is pleased to announce its partnership with Global SX Events Inc (GSX Events) which will hold part of the organization and marketing rights for the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series.

The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, the world’s leading BMX racing series, serves as the main qualification event for the 2012 Olympic Games. Introduced by the UCI in 2003, this series of races has revitalized BMX with its exciting and spectacular Supercross format.

UCI will maintain its role in governing the sport and will continue to draw up and manage the international calendar as well as establish the regulations for international competition.

UCI President Pat McQuaid explains, “BMX in general and the BMX Supercross World Cup in particular, are undergoing spectacular growth, which has accelerated since their Olympic baptism in Beijing in 2008. The UCI has invested considerably in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup to bring it up to its current level, but I am convinced that the partnership that will now link the UCI and Global SX Events will allow BMX to continue its growth in optimal conditions: still under the aegis of the UCI, but making the most of GSX Events’ skills.”

Based in Gahanna, Ohio (USA), Global SX Events Inc will take over the general management of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, for which it will hold part of the organization and maketing rights. In addition, GSX Events will also be the UCI partner in another field: the UCI’s BMX track building service. With the recent development of the discipline worldwide, GSX Events (through EliteTrax) will be able to answer to the increased demands for the construction of high-level BMX tracks around the world. The BMX track building service will be led by the well-known track building expert Tom Ritzenthaler.

Gary Aragon, Chairman and President of GSX Events, says, “The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series is currently the leading international BMX event. But as the sport grows, the series will need to grow with it. GSX Events is committed to continually develop and advance the sport of BMX racing the world over. Our goal is to partner with the UCI to take the sport through this next phase of growth.”
